Question #2 - Themes, Ideas, & Messages

Give a major theme/idea/message of the film. Discuss what you think the film’s point was (in relation to this theme) – and then comment on whether or not you think Scripture agrees with the way the theme was presented. Employ at least 1 Bible verse to make your point. Remember to use the Scripture in context. Again, feel free to comment on and disagree with other peoples’ ideas; and if you see someone else use Scripture that you think is out of context, please look it up and report back on your findings. Feel free to explore other themes than the ones mentioned already.

  1. Matthew 18:21, 22 Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. I think this is a great verse for this theme. I believe the theme is forgiving and letting go whatever happened in the past. This passage is telling us that we should already forgive because Jesus has forgiven us countless number of times. And also in this movie forgiveness is a huge part because otherwise they would have never found Alice.

    1. I agree with D. Lyons, i also think that the theme is forgiving. In the film we saw that Alice and Joe both forgave their fathers for not being their for them. Also at the end of the film, i could tell that they put all their past harms aside, and came together to send the alien away. Again i saw that everyone in the town forgave the alien for destroying their town, the alien went on his way, and everyone grew a little closer together.

    2. Yes I agree with you too. I believe that mainly the theme was focused on forgiveness, but good job explaining D Lyons.

    3. I agree with D. Lyons that the main theme is forgiving people who have done wrong to you. For example at the end of Super 8 Mr. Lamb forgave Alice father for what he did in the past. He accidently killed Joey's mother and the families were in a feud for awhile, and it was time to end the family feud.

    4. I agree with D.Lyons that the main theme of the movie was forgiving people that have not been there for you or like J.Flakes said people who have done wrong to you.I think it really made this clear in the movie when Alice forgave her father who hasn't been there for her in the past couple of years. Another main theme was letting go of the past when at the end of the movie Joe let go of his mom because he let go of the locket with her picture in it which in a way symbolized her.

    5. I agree as well with D. Lyons forgiveness is a major in this movie. I think that the movie was centered around forgiveness/grace.

  2. The chapter of Job agrees with the theme of Bad things happen, but you can still live. Because Job lost everything his family, his health, and his farm, but he still preform the work of God and think it too agree with the concept of super 8 with Joe Lamb lost his mother in the factory accident, but he still living and his has his father and friends and that's all that matters.

    1. I think the relation you made was spot on, I agree with you very much and think that the way the movie presented its self was Biblical and relatable. Even though the Alien and Joe had lost a lot and had been through a tough time I think they were still grateful for the little things they had, and cherished them.

      Delete
    2. J. Ferguson
I agree with you on your relation with the story of Job with the movie Super 8, but as an add on to your remark i think Joe foreshadowed Job's non-fearing ways, and faith. When Joe was picked up by the alien he was not scared, he just shouted "Bad things happen, but you can still live". He had extraordinary faith.

      Delete
    3. I agree because Job lost everything, but that did not stop him from having faith and trusting in God. Job kept moving forward just like Joey. Obstacles kept getting into Joe's way; one example was his dad. His dad did not want him to be with his friends, or near Alice to help figure out the alien mystery because it was dangerous to the eyes of his father . Another example was when Alice dad said that Joe was no longer to see Alice or come near her, but that did not stop him from helping his friend.

    4. I agree Job. Lost a lot and was able at the end of the day to praise god. I think that still applies to Joe and losing Mom. Even though Joe lost a lot he was still able to understand what the alien was feeling. He was also still able to live while having his mom taken away from him.

      Delete
    5. I agree but disagree. Joe was relying on himself instead of God. I would have liked this movie a little better if there was some spirituality. In Job, it is all about Job staying faithful to God and relying on him. There was none of this in this movie. If you use his Dad as an example than it does not work because he disobeyed him and still saw alice.

  3. Another major theme of the film would be judgement. I think that the film’s point of judgement was to express how it can lead to destruction. I also believe that Scripture agrees with the way the theme was presented because as mentioned in 1 Samuel 16:7, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” Judgement played multiple parts in the film, but the one that seemed the most biblical would be the terrestrial’s rampage. When citizens noticed the terrestrial at any time during the film, they would immediately respond by attacking it and panicking. The problem with that situation is that some people automatically think that the prodigious size of someone or “something” will tell you who they are. That is false because people don’t know your personality 100% and only the LORD knows your heart that much. I understand that a monster who is extremely tall, gruesome looking, and bulk in size can cause a great amount of collateral damage. Unfortunately, we can’t base people’s appearances of who they truly are. The LORD is the only judge and the only one who can judge us.

    1. I agree with you, Lewis. I think that we tend to look in mans outward appearance and we don't look at where their heart is. This is a good example of how our world is broken. We like people because how they look or act because they make us look good or they are cool in other peoples' eyes and we want that for ourselves too. Only God knows who we truly are on the inside and we shouldn't try to cover that up.

  4. There is multiple ways of forgiving in this movie. One would be at the end, when Alice and her dad hugged it was like her forgiving him of him yelling at her, drinking, and overall not being a good father.
Daniel 9:9- To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him.

    2. I agree with you guys whenever you state that Alice and Joe shoed forgiveness in a way, to forgive their parents. Alice's father had been drinking, cursing, yelling, and getting mad at Alice. Joe's father got very angry. I believe that he lost his temper too easily because of the death of his wife. Alice's father ended up accidently killing Joe's mother. We all need to try our best to show forgiveness, and to live like Jesus did.

    1. To D.Lyons
I can kind of see why you believe these two don't relate, but actually they do. Because even though Joe just lost his mother and Job lost everything we have to remember that Joe is still a kid. Losing his mom and his close relationship with his dad he probably thinks he did lose everything like he is an orphan and Job did lose everything and thats why I said they do relate.

  6. I believe that there were many messages that went on during the movie. One example was when Joe and his friend got into an arguement about Alice. They both thought that she was cute and the boys were mad at each other because they both like her. They ended up forgiving each other and they realized that both of them were being selfish. Also, like a couple of other people mentioned, Alice's father got mad at Alice becuase he was drunk, but he said that he was sorry and she forgave him. We all need to go to God and ask for forgiveness from God.

  7. I thought that the major theme of this movie was letting go of the past. This was really hard for Joe to do after his mom died in the terrible accident. Its also going to be very hard for the city to let go after this whole incident happened. I think that scripture would agree with how they were presenting this because, it showed how even though Joe knew it was Alice’s dads fault of his moms death he didn’t hold it against her and moved on and they were still friends. That also showed both moving on and forgiveness. Philippians 3:14 says “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” I think this does a good job of explaining the main idea of forgetting the past and move on to what lies ahead of you.

    1. I completely agree. The whole movie Joe kept his mothers necklace with him at all times. I would do this too if I had ever lost my mom. He always had a piece of her with him. He didn't want to believe that she was gone. At the end when him and his father came together as a family he let go of his mother necklace. He finally realized whats happened has happened and that its time to move on.

  8. I think a major theme in the story is forgiveness. Joe's dad held a grudge against Alice's dad for a long time. By the end of the story they relate by both caring about their kids and Joe's dad forgives Alice's dad. Forgiveness is definitely something the bible agrees with. It is mentioned several times such as, "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace" in Ephesians chapter 1 verse 7. If God has forgiven us and we are called to be like Christ, then we should forgive others as he has forgiven us.

    1. I agree with you, Drew. We can often be very selfish in this side of heaven because we are all broken people. No matter how hard we try we will always still fall short. We need to learn to be less sinful and realize that we aren't all perfect and the only way to seek true redemption is through Jesus. Things we have on Earth can only help for a moment but Jesus helps us forever.

  10. One theme of the movie is that bad things happen to good people. Joe’s mother, who is portrayed as a good person and a good mother, dies. No one in the film has anything bad to say about her. Joe obviously was very close to her. When he is upset, he goes to sit at her gravestone. Biblically, the question then becomes: Why would God allow bad things to happen to good people? As Christians, we must first recognize that there aren’t really any totally “good” people. Ever since the Fall, we all sin. The sin in the world causes everyone pain and suffering at some time. Also, Satan is at work in the world, intentionally causing more pain and suffering. Finally, we are only human. We can only partially understand God’s plan. We must continue to believe in God and know that everything is for his greater purpose, even if we cannot understand it. As Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

  11. I think one of the themes of Super 8 is letting go of the past. Joe's locket was all that he thought he had of his mother. But when it started to drift towards the ship he had to let go in order to save the alien. But I don't think Joe knew that he would always have a piece of his mother in his heart. Kind of Like when Jesus died and many thought he was gone forever, but now once we decide to follow him, he fills our heart with the holy spirit.

    1. I agree that letting go of the past is a key theme. Part of Joe wanted to keep the necklace but another part knew he had to let it go, both for the Alien and for himself. He was able to let it go because now he didn't stand alone. He had his father to lean on. The same is true for us. We don't need to hold on to our past because we have our Heavenly Father to lean on and support us. He is the one who helps us get through any hard times in our lives. As Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

    2. You make a good point. It's good to let go of the past. I agree with you about the jesus leaving, it was very clever, although Joe's mom isn't coming back...

  12. Another theme could also be that journeys are meant to be taken with friends. Joe would not have been able to save the town if it hadn't been for his pyromaniac of a friend lighting off those fireworks when it counted the most. We are meant to follow Christ in fellowship with others. And without our friends along the way, I doubt any of us could deal with all the conflicts of life.

    1. I agree that without his friends, beating the Alien would've been almost impossible. A good verse to go with this is Ruth 1:16-17... "But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”

    2. Damon that hits home, I never would have ever thought about it that way, but yes, journeys, are not meant to be traveled alone, they are supposed to be with support, with friends, and always with God. As it says in Philippians, I can do all things THROUGH Christ who strengthen me. I know at least for me that i could not have gotten through life without a LOT of help.

  13. I believe a major theme in this is forgiveness. In super Joe's mother was killed as a result of doing a favor for Alice's dad, Joe's Dada since then had resented and had unforgiveness in his heart toward him.Joe's dad has to forgive him so they can work together and look for there kids. The Bible agrees with this topic and a verse to show this is Ephesians 4:32 it says "Be kind to one another, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." This confirms the message of forgiveness.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think the main theme was forgiveness because there were a lot of problems that needed to be resolved through forgiving one another. I do think scripture agrees with the way this forgiveness was presented. A couple examples of forgiving in the movie is how despite the fact that Charles liked Alice but Alice like his best friend, Joe, he still had his back no matter what. Another example is when Joe forgave his father for his absence in Joe's life ever since his mother died. Matthew 6:12 says, "...And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." God forgives us our sins so we should forgive other peoples' sins against us.

    1. I agree I think that the theme of his movie is forgiveness. There was a lot of forgiving it also shows that we all do bad, we all have problems but we still have to forgive each other and love them. Ephesians 4:32 says "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."even if it as simple as what lydia said when alice likes Joe but Charles also liked Alice but he still loved and was there for his friend. Or something more serious like being an alcoholic and alice still embraced her father at the end .

      Delete
    2. I also agree with Jessie that forgiveness is one of the major themes of the movie. There were lots of situations that needed forgiveness in this movie. For example, Alice and her dad needed to forgive each other for when he was being abusive and she ran away. One verse that would be good for forgivness is Mathew 6:14-15 for if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

  15. I think the movie theme was grace. I’m referring, of course, to the silver locket, which simultaneously represents both the tragedy of his mother’s death and the possibility of grace in Joe’s suffering. A steel beam crushed the woman’s entire body, and yet the locket somehow survived. This instance of logic-defying grace gives Joe a boost which both aids him in his suffering and condenses the symbolic ground of suffering and hope for redemption into a single object. It represents the hope of further gratuity for Joe—for good things that shouldn’t happen and yet still do. Things like camera film surviving a train derailment, the attention of a formerly out-of-his-league girl, or the reconciliation of two men who spent a long time hating each other. As, James 1:17 says that God uses the strangest circumstances for his plan. This all represent grace in the film and that’s why I believe grace is the theme of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I believe that the theme of this movie is to let go of the past and accept the present because everything happens for a reason, just like in the end how Joe accepted his mom's passing. To look at this in a Christian's point of view, it means to trust God in the hardest of times, even when things look bad. This ties into Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God." We need to realize that God is in charge, and knows what He is doing. So, if this movie had included that God has everything under control then I think this Bible verse would be a perfect fit for the theme of Super 8.

  17. I feel that the main theme of this film is that no matter what people have done, you have to be forgiving, such as when Alice and Joe forgave their parents and the alien, even though they have committed really bad sins. Their was redemption is this movie when Alice's father apologized to Mr. Lamb. I really think that the main theme in this film was forgiveness, and it was shown throughout the whole film.

    3. What do you not understand CS?

    4. Yes thank you Danielle. I think that Phillipians 4:13 really explains the theme of this movie, or mainly how suffering and sin should be dealt with. "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." It really shows that no matter what is happening, the Lord will give us strength. So basically, the two main themes I saw were that no matter how much you sin, you can always be forgiven, and no matter what happens, at some point you have to put your suffering behind you.

    5. Thanks, but I get what you mean now.

  18. The main theme of this movie for me was hope through difficult times. Jeremiah 29:11-12 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. This verse really shows how we have to hold on to the lord and his words even though you don't know what is going on. In the movie the whole town has to rely on this verse because there whole town was destroyed especially the kids that were separated from their families.

    1. I really like this because I never would have connected that verse with this movie. When you said that God has a plan for you and then when I connected it with the aliens attacking and almost destroying their whole town that they should know that God has some place for them.

      Delete
    2. I agree with both of you. The verse you chose is absolutely perfect. Just like Jessica said, it made me think about how that tied in with the movie. God does have a plan for everything he created, EVEN the alien. (Even though there is no such thing as aliens.)

      Delete
  19. I think the main theme for Super 8 is that you should never give up. Psalms 31:24 says, "Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!" I think this verse shows me that in the movie, even though they were kids and they couldn't possibly stop the alien, they still tried.

  20. I liked this movie. A lot of redemption was shown towards the conclusion, and every one who had enemies came out closer to friends and family than anything. Alice and her father were now more loving to each other, and the same thing happened with Joe and his dad. The director turned total chaos into a beautiful story of redemption. Just like God does with us.

    1. I agree with this and really like the metaphor you used. The last two sentences you wrote meant that we as humans are sinful, just like the story of Super 8. God forgives these sins that we preform and later redeems us and lets us into heaven even though we really don't deserve it after all of our sins. In the end of Super 8, God redeems the story and brings everyone together through a hard time. This story is really redemptive if you apply it to the right part of your life, and I really liked your response to this question.

      Delete
    2. I totally agree with you. Sometimes God puts bad things in our life simply to teach a lesson He thinks we need to learn. We should never give up on something that's not going well because in the end (most of the time), our patience will pay off and things will turn out better than we realistically envisioned in the first place.

  21. 1 Cor 3:15 "If anyones's work is burned up, he will suffer, though himself will be saved, but only through fire." I think that this pertains to what happens in the movie because even though both a lot of the characters have gone through loss or have to live with a burden they fight through it and it is hard but come out the other end and there lives have changed for the better. I think a major theme of the story is strength because with out strength Joe, Alice's dad, the Alien, and any other conflicts would not of been resolved. I think that when it says he will be saved but only through fire, I think that is saying he will get through it but with bumps in the way and a lot or work.

  22. There are multiple ways of forgiving in this movie.

    1. I agree with Luke when he states that forgiveness played a big factor in the movie. Both Joe and Alice's fathers asked for forgiveness from Joe and Alice because the fathers finally figured out that they were not being the parents that they were supposed to be. We all sometimes act how we shouldn't, but we need to pray for God to change our hearts and to live for Him. We should all try to forgive like Jesus did. Colossians 1:13 states, "Bear with one another and if anyone has a complaint against another, FORGIVING each other; as the Lord has FORGIVEN you, so you must also forgive." This is a great verse that stands out to me and helps me to forgive, just like Jesus does.

  23. One of the main themes of this film was even though bad things happen you can still get through it. I think that that is a big part of the story because he needed to let go of his mom. His mom was obviously a big part of his life and he missed her very much, but when he always was with that necklace that belonged to his mom. I know that having something that reminds you of the person is comforting and without it you feel empty and alone, but God can help you in those situations. He helps you get through things that make you feel can't be fixed. The boy finally realized that he always had his mom with him and he didn't need the necklace. He also realized that his dad could also help with his problems because he was going through the same thing that he was. There is a solution to every problem.

  24. I think the main point in this movie was that "Just because its different doesn't mean its bad." The reason I said this was because the alien just wanted to get home. It was scared and hungry because the air force kept it captive for a long time. Thats why I think that statement is the main point.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I didn't think about that. That definitely could be a major theme. The people are afraid of the alien ecause it is different. All it wanted was to go home. Justbecause it was different doesn't mean its bad, it just wanted to go home

  25. I think that the major theme of the film is that when we judge people, what we think of them can sometimes be completely wrong. I think that scripture agrees with this because John 7:24 says, "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment."

They were just putting there kids safety first which is what they should do as parents but i dont think they forgave each other. 27. Are any of the themes absolutely against what Scripture teaches? If so, what? Why do you think that?

Also, what is in your opinion the most Biblical theme of the movie? Why do you think that?

    Another question is this:
This movie is about characters that are your age. Were the themes that they were dealing with in the movie similar to ones that you deal with in your own lives? Also, was the film realistic in how the teenagers portrayed?

    This is open to anyone.

    1. I don't think that any teenagers have gotten kidnapped by an alien but some things we do go through is our relationship with our parents. It might not be perfect for us especially as teenagers because we are growing and think we know it all. We might think are parents are stupid and annoying but it is very important to have a healthy relationship with our parents. I think that in the movie they don't know it at the beginning but realize it at the end.

      Delete
    2. A theme that could be against scripture is disobeying your parents. In Exodus 20:12 it says, "Honor your father and your mother." When Alice stole and drove her dad's car she did not seem guilty at all. When Charles's sister was dressing inappropriately they made it funny like she did not really care. She never seemed to repent. In my opinion, the most biblical theme was reconciliation/forgiveness. This was shown between Joe and Charles when Charles was jealous. It was also shown between Joe and Alice's dads.

I think the themes were similar to ones we deal with like jealousy and disobeying parents. I think, in middle school especially, we are trying so hard to get approval from our peers. We think if we break rules that our parents make it will make us cool. An example for jealousy is if someone else is more popular than you we will be jealous and not like that person.

  28. I think the main factor in Super 8 was redemption. Throughout the film I could see countless times where Joe's father showed how much he hated Alice's dad but at the end he forgave him and reconciled with him even though it was evident that Joe's dad blamed him for losing his wife.

  29. The main themes of "Super 8" I think would be, to let go of the past as Joe father had to do with Alice’s father. The Second theme that ties in with the first is forgiving, yet they are still different, because you might forgive yourself for that penalty kick that you missed, but you torture yourself with the thought of missing it again every second.

    1. I agree with you on the themes. I also liked how you tied it into real life. A good Bible verse for forgiveness would be Matthew 6:14-15 "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." So scripture does in fact agree with these themes.

  30. One of the biggest themes that is present throughout the movie is moving on. Joe had trouble forgetting about his mother's death. Also, Jack had a grudge on Louis for killing his wife. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." This verse encourages looking to the future, because has a whole life planned for you. I think this verse agrees with what the movie portrayed, because at the end everyone forgave each other.

    1. I totally agree with you that is so awesome that you could apply that verse to the movie like that. We can all take something from that verse because we are having to constantly look to the future and see what God has in store for us. Especially the people who lived in the town that was evacuated.

  31. I think that the main point of the film is that even though bad things happen... You can still live. Scripture totally agrees with this, just look at the book of Job. Everything this man has becomes a nonentity. He loses everything he has but he doesn't just keel over and die.

  32. I think the main point of super 8 is to never give up. The main characters could have left the city and try to forget everything but they still tried to get to the bottom of things and in the end they helped an alien. They could have gave up many times but the did not that is what I think the main point of super 8.

  33. I think that the main theme of Super 8 was forgiveness. As it often states in Matthew, it is the way to forgive someone as many times as they wish for it. A chapter from Matthew is Matthew 18.

  34. Forgiveness could also be another theme of Super 8. Throughout the film, both Mr. Dainard and Mr. Lamb established grudges with each other and struggled with forgiveness. Now apparently how Mrs. Lamb died has something to do with Mr. Dainard not arriving to his job on time. Whether that may be the case or not the Bible says, “bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” - Colossians 3:13. In the film, this sort of act is the case because Mr. Dainard and Mr. Lamb put their differences aside, forgave each other, and collaborated with each other on finding their kids.

  35. Swearing would be another theme of the film. Obviously the characters in Super 8 are known for cursing every 5 minutes of the movie. I don’t know why the writers chose to put cursing in the movie, but I think the cursing was meant for entertainment towards the audience. How the writers and the Bible viewed the cursing are two completely different things. The Bible says, “And he called the people to Him and said to them, “Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” - Matthew 15:10-11. From what the Bible says about cursing, I can say that Scripture does not agree with the movie because cursing in the writer’s eyes are probably comedy gold, while cursing in God’s eyes defiles you.

  36. Another major theme throughout Super 8 is friendship. The movie is about a group of friends making a zombie movie on their summer vacation. Their friendship is tested, though, as a lot of conflict and trials are added to their lives. The friendships among the kids were believable and resembled a lot of my friendships growing up. Friendship isn’t just about the good times, though; friendships are really forged through the difficult times. That’s reflected in the movie and it’s hopefully something that is seen in our own lives. We have the opportunity to be true, authentic friends when our friends go through a difficult time. It’s not hard to watch sports or talk about video games; it is hard to sit with a friend who is suffering. And even though those times aren’t as fun, they are the moments in which friendships are deepened to entirely new levels.

    1. So true M.Cicka! I too believe friendship was a key in this movie! Throughout all the good and bad events, the group kept together and kept working on. I love how you elaborated on how friendships are grown in the movie and in life! We easily tie friendships to good events, but it is even the rough events that will unite us. Friendships are a main key in our lives and I stride to help care for friends like how you do.

  37. I feel like the message of this story was to not be too quick to judge because if everyone wasn't so judgmental the alien would've gotten back to its planet sooner. I think the bible agrees with this because I remember when mr. scott was teacher us about the anointment of david and God said to samuel " Man looks on the outer appearance but God looks at the heart.

  38. I agree with Melinda, many of the citizens in the town immediately thought that the alien was a evil bloodthirsty freak that only wanted to kill people but instead it just wanted to go home. Also I think that we as sinful humans judge before we really get to know someone and this is really easy to do but it should be the last thing we do when we think of someone's name.

  40. Probably the overarching theme of the whole movie would be that bad things happen, but life goes on and will get better. The scripture I think goes along with this is 1 Timothy 4:16: "Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers." I feel this goes along with the movie's theme because it talks about how when you hit a rough patch in life, you must persevere. If you do, you save yourself from sinking further into the suffering, along with the others who were wrapped into the situation with you.

  41. Earlier, Markus stated that friendship was one of the main themes. I guess when I thought about the movie, that never really came to mind. The only themes I really thought of were that you must persist though times are rough, and don't be so quick to judge. This somehow completely missed my train of thought. Now that he pointed it out, I'm deeply shocked I missed something so important to the movie. Friendship shows up everywhere in every scene. Alice and Joe, Joe and his friends, Joe's teacher and the alien, and later Joe and the alien. Friendship played such a big part in the movie by saying that it is always important to have a friend nearby, so that they can help you through hard situations.

  42. I think the movie was about being able to forgive people. in the whole movie they were forgiving, like when Joe's dad forgave Alice's dad for killing Joe's mom. one bible verse that comes to mind is psalm 130: 4 but with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.

  43. I also agree with Milena, I think this is do not Judge because in the end of the movie, Alice's dad helps them and he was not so bad to be around. I just think that they all just got off on the wrong foot. in prophet 24;23 it shows that we should not be to quick to judge.
