Question #3 - Appearences

a. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. How do the characters make judgments/decisions based upon the outward appearances of things and other characters? Are these judgments/decisions fair and right? Are all judgments we make wrong? Does the LORD ever want us to make judgments?
b. Simply by observing the characters in the film, we do not know their hearts; but at the same time, by their actions and words, we get clues about their motivations and beliefs.Giving actual examples from the film, discuss specific characters and what drives them to do what they are doing. Considering these motivations/actions (both good and bad), how do we see similar motivations/actions in our culture (either in general or specifically in our school)?

  1. In Super 8 i say that everyone in the town thought that the alien was evil, and then Joe talked to the alien and saw that they were both trying to find who they were. I saw that ,i think his name was Charles, motive was to film a movie. Any chance he got he tried to get in another scene for find the perfect filming spot. I think, like Charles, we should always try to get the job done.

    1. Everyone thought the Alien was bad but Joe was able to see past that and both of them found comfort in each other at the moment when Joe not only tells the Alien that he can live, but I think that Joe is also telling himself that he can live and move on from the sorrow of the Accident with his mom. I think Charles was obsessed with finishing the movie and even put his friends in danger when the train was rushing past them to film a scene. He has good intentions for being motivated to film the movie, but he should use his motivation to help others

    3. Most movies depict aliens as bloodthirsty killers sent from a galaxy far far away. But by the end of Super 8, it showed that the alien was just a poor schmuck that couldn't find a way to get back home. It's the way that the alien tried to get back at his tormentors that even saddened him further. But all that the humans think is that there's a bloodthirsty killer from a galaxy far far away on the loose, climbing in your windows and snatching your people up. All of the humans, except for Joe and Dr. Woodward, don't understand what's going on in the aliens head.

    4. I think people think of them as just kids and they don't perceive us as anything important in this world. We are just overlooked just like the people in the film. Also i think that this movie is showing that Kids are really important too. Also i think this is showing that we should always stand up for what is right and that we can always stand up for a good cause. Also if we can help someone we should.

  2. A) I really did not see much judgement going on in this movie maybe accept the monster and everyone knew that it had the power to kill them in seconds. And yes I think that the monster had the capabilities of destroying and killing people. No I do not think it is right to judge people we have no right to do that because we have no idea what is happening in the lives of the people we judge. I also do not think that the Lord wants us to judge, he obliviously wants us to not put ourselves in a bad situation but that is complete different then judging people.
    B) Joe Lamb had the desire of monster sculpture/designing and monster makeup and it never really gave details on why he liked doing it. We can get almost obsessed with it and it can take away our attention from God.

  3. In super 8 I also didn't see that much judgment except for the alien. Them thinking it was evil, but really I can kind of see why they blamed him because he abducted people. Anyway sometimes judgments can be wrong, but the Lord doesn't want us to judge because he made all the living things and basically when we judge people we're telling God he made a mistake making him and we're being prideful. Charles in the movie really had a motive of making the film no matter what was going on and I really liked that about Charles, we all should be like Charles and no matter what's happening in the world it shouldn't stop us from getting things done.

    1. I agree with the part about if how was judge people we are judging God's creation, everyone is created in the image of God and if we are to judge God then who are we? Are we Christians by sizing up a person and judging them and the way God made them? No, we are not and I think that Joe sees past the Aliens appearance and sees the heart and the mislead but not intentional sinful actions that he made.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you H. Hightower Joe probably just looked at the heart and not the alien's appearance

      Delete
    3. I seriously agree with what Hilary had to say; we don't have the right to judge God's creation because that's just it. It's GOD's creation, not ours or anybody else's. And when God makes someone, it is in the image of himself. So when you judge another person, you're kind of judging God as well. We are all supposed to try to look past other's appearances and try to to see what their true intentions are; whether they are good or bad we should try to understand where they are coming from.

      Delete
    4. I also really agree with what Hilary and Lydia said. God made us all in his image. Just because someone sins differently than us does not mean that they are not as good as we are. We all sin whether people reveal it or not. We are all messed up. None of us should be putting ourselves over others to feel superior. God is the only one who can judge us. There is a difference between trying to point out something someone is doing wrong to try and help them. If you are genuinely trying to help a friend with a sin then that is not judging. When you just put someone down to make yourself feel better that is a sin. There is a fine line that we need to be careful with so we do not just offend others but help them.

  4. In super 8 i think that the people in the town thought that the "thing" was a bad thing. But it was just scared and homesick. Joe the main character was just trying to figure out who he was. and the "thing" was also trying to figure who he was. And then charles the movie maker, was always wanting to make his film and make it better. He was always trying to get it done

  5. A. During the film, judgments were made upon the terrestrial based on its outward appearance and Joe because of him being the son of Mr. Lamb. These judgments weren't fair because no one or nothing deserves to be judged based on its outward appearance or who they are related to. I believe that all judgments we make are wrong and that the LORD never wants us to make judgements because He is the only judge and the only one that knows our hearts 100%.
    B. The movie never gave a summary of the kid’s personalities or why they did the things they did. From I saw I can put together that the kids probably didn’t believe that cussing was a sin or that profane language existed. Whether we may believe or not, cussing is a sin and no matter what the situation may be, it is never okay to curse. I noticed that for some apparent reason Joe’s best friend, Charles would constantly say unkind words to Cary. The movie also never mentioned why this situation was, but I also noticed that in Joe’s bedroom there would be the head of a zombie. To me it seemed that Joe and Charles had a strong interest of zombies portraying in movies and that was probably the reason of them filming their movie in the first place. These motivations can relate to us a lot because there may be something in life that we strive for a lot to the point where we obsess about it, especially when they are jeopardized.

  6. A- In the movie When all the kids are together at the diner the day after the crash, there were characters make mean remarks and calling others names like "smartin" "look who's talking math camp" "fat" "chompers". I think we often time judged people when were not supposed to. That's Gods Job not ours. When they are in the diner I think this is a perfect example of judging
B- Carry (the boy who likes to blow things up) he loves blowing things up. Which is like an obsession of his. Which can come before God

    1. To answer B, I don't understand where Carry is getting his motives from. In the movie it doesn't say anything about his background and why/how he got his start to blowing up things and play with fireworks. However, I can see how this could come before God because he could be spending more time blowing things up than keeping up a steady relationship with God. I just don't understand what could be driving him to do this.

    2. Kelly I think you are right in most of what you say, but when you say it is God's job to judge, you are wrong, God does not judge he literally knows what we are thinking before we are thinking it, he knows are intentions, and does not need to judge, nor will he because he is perfect.

      Delete
    3. I actually agree with Kelly. It says in Hebrews 9:27, "And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment," God DOES judge us once we die. He just does it out of love. I agree with Graham that God does believe that we are perfect, but we still sin.

      Delete
    4. I agree with kelly. I think this is a perfect example of judging on appearances. To be honest at first i didn't really catch on that this was all judging. Today in our generation this is what friends usually tease each other about. Friends would judge who a person a likes, what a person likes, what they look like, and how they act. People can pass away with it by simply saying there "friends" when really there kind of just judging them. When people are judging your basically telling God He did something wrong. When he didn't! He made us the way He wanted us to be.

      Delete
  7. A- I agree with the people that talked about how the alien was "bad", but in the end, the alien turned out to be "good". Everyone thought that the alien was bad, but Joe took his chance and the alien was nice to him. We can often be like this. We could be the person that judges on the outward appearance and not look on the heart. They alien had a good heart and we all need to as well. One way to have a heart change for God is to pray that God will give us the strength to give us a heart change.

B- Joe had the motive to make the movie the best that he could, he was willing to do anything to get it the best that he could. I have motives that sometimes come before God. I put so much time and effort into school and in sports that I sometimes put those motives before God. I pray that God will help me put Him in front of other things that could become destractions in my life.

    1. That's so true. And we all defiantly have to have a good heart just like the alien. And that is really cool that you are trying to put God in front of other things. I struggle with that and with the help of God I am getting much better.

  8. A. An example of judgement was when Alice judged Joe as being a tattle tale just because he was the deputy's son. Although it was not such a great thing for Alice to be driving her dad's car when she was under age and did not have permission, it was not right of her to immediately peg down Joe. This was not necessarily a judgment of his appearance, but I believe it still shows why judging can be bad.
    B. A motivation of Charles was to make a great film and also to impress and get to know Alice. He liked her and wanted her to like him which drove him to be jealous of Joe which was bad.

    1. I think you're comparison of Alice's judgment in the beginning is very accurate. I didn't even think of that one.

    2. I agree, she was too quick too judge I feel she should've asked if he would tell, even though what she did was wrong. But I could see why she would be quick too judge because he could've lied and said he wouldn't tell when she asked.

  9. A- In this movie I saw judgment going on a lot. The one that stood out to me most though was when Joes dad judged Alice. He was saying that she was a bad kid and all these other bad things about her just because of her dad’s bad reputation. Alice’s dad was a bad man but that doesn’t automatically make Alice a bad kid. This was not very right or fair because Joe’s dad never knew Alice but he still told Joe to stay away from her. The Lord never ever wants us to make judgments especially like this one since he didn’t know her.
B- In the very beginning of the movie we see Alice take her dads car and drive the kids around without a license. The only reason that she really did that was because she didn’t like her dad. Since she didn’t like her dad she just disobeyed him as much as possible. I see this a lot going on in out world today. If someone doesn’t like this other person they just ignor them or annoy them or disobey them, just like Alice did in the movie.

    1. I agree with you that it was wrong for Mr. Lamb to judge Alice based on his knowledge of her father. The Lord would not judge someone based on the acts of others. Deuteronomy 24:16 says, “Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin.”

    2. That is such a great bible verse to go with Joes father judging Alices father. Also M.Trost that's such a great motive for why Alice took her dads car I never would have thought of that I just though she was taking the car to be in a movie.

  10. A- The main instance of judgment in the movie was the alien. When people are afraid of something they have never seen before, they tend to think the object is evil or bad. This was represented in the movie, like the army was shooting rockets at it in the end. These judgments in my opinion are not fair or just. Just because someone is different or strange on the outside has nothing to do what is in the heart. Our judgments that we make everyday are mostly wrong when it comes to what people are wearing or how good they are at sports. But God allows us to judge what is wrong and right like if the government says to worship another god, we judge that this is unbiblical.

B- In the movie, Joe goes back to the deserted town just to save the girl. He fights his conscience to not go back to save the girl because he most likely would be killed in the process of trying to save her. In my daily life, I don’t really see this happening but when the shooter came to Connecticut and the teacher tried to hide the kids in the bathroom, the shooter did shoot kids and the teacher. The substitute teacher tried her best to save the children. Even though she was unsuccessful, it showed how she put others first then herself.

    1. Q-A. I totally agree with Markus. When we something unexpected and unnatural for us happens, we will mostly categorize it as bad. If Aliens come, the easiest thing and simple thing is to exterminate the bad (Aliens), to "spare" the good (Humans). This also can be seen through friends. You can have a great group and have it all, when someone comes and you don't know them, it is easy to say no because they could be a threat to you. This can lead us to many missed opportunities in both persons lives, good and bad. Many of us struggle with this, my self included. I pray for God to open our hearts more to change and new things, to craft us in the way he deems necessary.

      Delete
    2. I also agree with Markus. The people thought that the alien was evil but they didn’t realize that he was just trying to go home. The humans took it as an attack. Also that is a good connection about the substitute teacher. The sub and Joe were both showing sacrifice. They thought of saving the other peoples lives instead of their own.

      Delete
  11. A. Many people in this movie made judgments. For instance, Mr. Lamb wanted Joe to stay away from Alice, who he didn’t really know at all, because he did not like Alice’s father. Alice judged Joe, thinking he would tell his dad that she was driving illegally, because he was the deputy’s son. The boys all seemed to like Alice, even though none of them knew her very well. They probably decided that they liked her because they thought she was pretty. Finally, everyone judged the alien as evil, even though the alien’s goal was really to simply go home. All of these judgments were wrong. Most judgments made solely on appearance are wrong. I do believe that people can make valid judgments, however, if they work to see a person’s heart. Being human, we are going to have opinions. But, it is not our job to judge other people or their behavior. In Matthew 7:1, it says, “Judge not, that you be not judged.”

    B. Mr. Dainard and Mr. Lamb were both selfish. Mr. Dainard drank, and thought only about himself. It was clear that Alice had to fend for herself. It is a little surprising that she turned out to be as nice as she was in the movie because he clearly provided a poor role model for her. Mr. Lamb looks at first like a much “better” person. But, he doesn’t really know or understand Joe, his own son. After Mrs. Lamb dies, Mr. Lamb is consumed with his own grief and doesn’t really try to comfort his son. I think everyone has the tendency to be selfish, but it is something everyone should fight against. One of the Bible’s Ten Commandments says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” It is impossible to show others love when you are only thinking about yourself. I think today, more and more people are thinking only about themselves.

  12. a) One way this movie judged a thing is when they immediately thought the alien was bad and locked it up. They judged it before it could ever truly do anything. Another way I saw judgement in this movie was with Charles' sister Jen. Sure, she dressed a certain way, but that doesn't automatically mean she acts that way. A lot of people in my class when we watched it automatically pinned her as a 'slut', and I have to admit, so did I. I don't think judgements are fair unless you honestly know this person or thing. Most judgements we make are wrong, not in accuracy but by the reason we make them. Usually, we don't have the right to make these judgments. God is the only one worthy of judging our hearts and intentions, and the only one who can.

    b) Alice's father, Louis, was driven to drinking because of his grief of Joe's mother's death. A lot of people in our culture today drink in the hopes the intoxication will numb the pain away, but it almost never does that. Alice herself was motivated to runaway from home because of her father's actions. Sometimes, nowadays, children runaway because they feel unloved or unwanted by their families.

  13. The judgment that we make towards the total strangers that we walk past in the streets, hallways, or mall are unfair. We aren't always wrong, but that doesn't mean we're always right either. You don't know if you are better than that person so there's no valid reason for your criticism towards that person. What if you see a man with tattoos on his arms and face walking down the street? As he ducks into an alley you start to think negative thoughts like" He's probably a drug addict.", or, " I'd better stay away from him." So you take your own advice and quickly walk past the alley. You don't even stop and look at him. You are so afraid to go near him that you don't even see him sit against the wall and start to sob over the fact that he can't provide for his family. Is that fair? No. That man could be any other Christian in this world. But you went against your better judgment and decided to ignore him when all he needed was a shoulder to cry on, or a quick prayer. It is not our job to judge, it is God's. So don't conform to that pattern of the world, create a path that God himself could walk on.

    1. I totally agree with your scenario of the man with the tattoos on his arms. Whenever i see someone i always get a little nervous because i'm afraid that they are someone who would sell drugs or something. Now that you point that out, i realized that i was judging all these people and i didn't even know their story.

      Delete
    2. That is so true about us being Judge full toward people we don't even know. I feel the same way C.Kyriakos does whenever I see a person who has tattoos or any thing like that. I automatically judge them its almost natural, but I never thought about other details such as if he is a christian or maybe hes just going through a hard time. Next time something like this happens I will try not to judge.

  14. In the story many clues are given that pertain to each character's individual development. Joe is still carrying his mother's locket, so he is the type of person who doesn't tend to let go of the past. Alice has no role model at home, but she does her best to fend for herself, even if it does recourse to stealing a car or run away from home. Her father is a drunk, who does is best to love her, but has trouble looking past the neck of the bottle. Each of these characters have a pattern that they go back to, whether it's drinking or disobedience, they all have flaws and so do we. That is what separates us from God, and that is how it should be.

    ReplyDelete
  15. a- In the film, we see all of the characters looking at the outward appearance. Especially later on in the movie, appearance is very important to the characters. Charles, as head director of the movie, chose people with a good appearance. Not only that, everyone is afraid of the alien because of his appearance, and no one looks at the heart. Later on, Joe finally realized that the alien was feeling the same thing as he was, and finally understood him. This made him start looking at the heart and not the appearance. By looking at the alien from a perspective where they were only looking at the outward appearance, the alien was definitely misjudged. People thought he was evil, but really he had lost a loved one and didn't know how to handle it. In the bible it says that we should never judge, and for us as humans it is very hard not to judge others. We even think to ourself judgments that we think about that person, and even then we are secretly judging that other person.
b- In the film, one of the characters main motivations is to make the film. Now in most cases, making a movie wouldn't lead you to do the things that these characters did, but again this is in the 1980's, before the kids had tablets with iMovie. So instead of having permission from their parents, the kids did it behind their parents' backs, and stole money and cars, and went places without permission. So yes, the decisions they were making were wrong, but their drive was most likely harmless. They way they were driven by it was also wrong, but for most people, making a movie would not drive them to extremes. In our school, we see similar motivations. Not such making a movie, but maybe getting good grades. I have met people before, not at Westminster, who are always focused on school. They are always studying, and always working. Now that's not a bad thing, but as Joe and Charles were making the movie and led to extremes, some people are led to extremes with school work.

    ReplyDelete
  16. A- in this movie there is little judgement but when there is judgement you can really tell. The first time i really noticed was when they were sitting in the diner, and some of the kids would pick on Charles because he was a little bigger so the would call him fat and words related to him being bigger then the rest. But fat was not the only words used to describe and make fun of each other. They didnt just pick on charles. The next time i saw judgement was with the charles kid again, but this time he was picking on himself. he was talking to one of his friends and was like i could never date alice she would never like a fat kid like me. he was talking to his friend because they both liked alice but alice liked the friend. Finally i think the most obvious form of judgement is with the alien. Everyone in this town is freaking out obout this terrible monster. but Joe just went straight to the monster and just talked to it and it just left and didnt do anything else to them. Everyone was just looking at the outside of the monster or believing the bad rumors about it but joe took time and talked to it and it wasnt bad intentions just scared. like God he looks at the heart but we are all stuck judging by how they look or the rumors they hear

  17. a) In this movie I think that the first thing people judge is the alien. They all see him as a bad. They judge him by what he does and don't care about what happened in his past. Human judge people by what the say and do without knowing their past.Another person who judges in the movie is alice. Just because he was the deputy's child she thought he was a perfect child who does everything right.

b)Charles was very motivated and was determined to make an excellent movie. He was willing to go to extremes just to make a movie and maybe he also wanted to show alice how great he was at making movies. which led to jealousy because joe liked her too. In the world today people are so willing to do anything to get something they want. it can get to an unhealthy point.like A guy can get to a point where he obsessed with a girl and if she call it quits he would be willing to do anything to get her back.

    ReplyDelete
  18. a) I didn't see many times where characters in Super 8 judged one another by the way they looked besides the alien that ended up being good and wanted to go home, but many people have already blogged about that. During the movie, Mr. Lamb made a statement to Joe saying that he couldn't see Alice anymore or be with her. I don't think he said this necessarily because of Alice's outward appearance, but about what kind of a family she comes from. This isn't fair because she can't change or help that her dad is a drunk, and Mr. Lamb judged that she was a bad person before he even had the chance to say hello. God is the only person who truly sees our hearts; Therefore every judgment we make is wrong. God does not want us to judge His creation because all judgement is, is negative, false accusations of one another.

    b) Alice isn't a bad kid, however some of the decisions she makes aren't very smart, and I think she gets some of her motives from her broken family. In the beginning, she took her dad's car without permission and having a drunk dad, I think she got this idea from something he would have done. This could apply to a kid in school who might have an older sibling who cheats on homework and never puts forth effort. That student with the older sibling may feel the urge to want to do the same thing, then end up getting bad grades as well. This doesn't mean this student hates school or is a bad kid, but they just grew up around this way of living.

I also really like what you were saying alice and why she makes the choices she made and how it could effect normal kids that have sibling that dont make very chooses. Like putting the example of alice and her broken family next to a real like situation.

    4. i agree with you trudy. I think that Joe's dad judges her because she is the son of a drinker and they associate her with her dad. When Joe's dad says not to talk to her anymore, he says don't hang out with that mans daughter not her. this means that he is only treating her as his daughter. Not a completely different person.

  19. There were a few times when people were either insulting or joking about someone's appearance. Towards the beginning of the movie one of the boys were at a restaurant and a boy made fun of another boy about his weight. He was also spreading it around to the waiters which obviously wasn't very nice. The boy wasn't that bothered by it but it was still hurtful how he said things like that to him. Not everyone can look or be perfect. Also you can point out some things like if someone looks pretty, you can say they look pretty. If someone doesn't meet up to your standards you can't point it out to them because it can make the other person feel bad. I can admit that I have done that a few times, but I should try to brake the habit. You need to try to look at people in their hearts and not their appearance.

    1. I agree people need to start saying nice things and not bad things to each other. Even if they're your friends, you don't know if they took you seriously or not. I also agree that people should start making it a habit to look at the heart and not the appearance.

  20. A: I did not see much judgement in the movie, really the only thing I noticed was that everyone thought the alien was so bad because it was breaking a ton of stuff and hurting people, but really I thought it just didn't know better. Therefore those judgements would not be right. I think that we can judge people positively, and that would be right. For example, if a family member of yours plays high school football, and you see that he has tons of college scholarship offers, you could say, "Wow, he's a really good linebacker," and that would be a good way to judge people. Now, in the same situation, you could say, "We all notice your letters, you big show-off!" and that is very sinful. I think that the Lord is fine with us judging people, as long as it is like the first example and not like the second.

    B. Charles was motivated to make a successful movie, so when everybody didn't cooperate as planned, he seemed to be bossy and lose his temper. Also when his friendship with Joe was terminated, he couldn't live with himself because he had a major role in the movie.
On the surface, Alice isn't a bad kid, but she made some stupid decisions in the movie. She took her dad's car out to the train station before she was driving age, and almost had it destroyed in the train wreck. She also made arrangements to hang out with Joe after her dad had terminated their friendship.
I think that in our culture, many people have different personalities, some in direct contrast with one another. There are the people that are motivated to do well in school. Others excel at a sport and are constantly working out trying to improve 24/7. Some people are willing to do anything to get a quick laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  21. a) Everyone thought that the alien was evil because he was kidnapping people and stealing their supplies. When Joe looked at the alien, he looked past all the bad things that the alien has done. He told the alien that he can live, and he let go of what happened to his mom. The judgments that the characters made about the alien weren't fair. They didn't care what the alien needed, they just wanted the alien to be destroyed. Judgment that we make are sometimes wrong because we assume that a person is mean or rude, but actually they are really nice. We judge people by the way they look and by the way they talk. We should get know someone before, we judge them. The Lord doesn't want us to make judgments about someone because how can we judge someone when we act just like them.

  22. A) As other people have said, the main judging that I saw going on throughout the movie was about the alien being "a big, terrible beast" when all it really wanted to do was just go home peacefully. The friend group also made fun of each other in ways such as joking about their weight or their courage in certain situations; even though they did this in a kidding matter, they still weren't being completely fair to each other in terms of their feelings being hurt. Another form of judgement was in the very beginning of the movie when the boy's mother died, and Alice's dad came to the meeting. The dad immediately threw out Alice's father because he was possibly the reason that the accident happened, he was drunk, and he was a bad example. Nobody really knew how her father really felt when he came into the meeting. Overall, I don't think the judgements were fair or right. Even though some the judgements we make aren't always wrong, it doesn't make them right. We are still comparing their being as either better or worse than another example. God doesn't want us making judgements towards others. For one thing, that's only His job and nobody else's. Also He wants us living together lovingly and peacefully.

  23. B) For some reason, my first example is almost the last scene in the movie; Joe doesn't want to let go of the necklace that his mother had since the day he was born, so that it will fly to the alien's ship because it was sentimental after his mother died. That necklace symbolized his mother and he never wanted to let her go, yet he realized he had to move on. This goes to play with our culture as well. We usually never want to move on. We don't want to move on after a loved one has died or has become ill because we want to forever have the memories that we shared with them; we want to preserve their soul forever. Another example, when Alice's father was drunk and told her to leave "just like her mother did," she actually left for a reason that I think would be that she was sick of being told who she could and couldn't hang out with. She wanted her own friends and probably her own personal life with no one controlling her decisions. Again putting it into our culture, nobody wants to live by the rules, but they are forced to because they are laws. We want to live our own life without having to do boring, or painful, or unpleasant things, but we know we have to in order to survive.

    1. I had completely forgotten about when Joe's mother's necklace had floated away from him at the end of the movie and he had to let go (literally) of the past. I completely agree with the point you made on how it relates to our culture. I have a hard time letting go. And it's especially hard to let go of a loved one.

    2. I agree with Carter that when you love someone and something happens you are fearful in case they might come back or just keep on drifting away.

    3. Your right when he let go of the necklace it symbolizes something that you need to let go. I have a hard time letting go because you never know if they are going to keep on drifting or come back again.

  24. A. Basically, all the characters made judgements. For example, everyone made a judgement on the alien, they all thought that he was here destroy everything, but once the alien touched Alice she understood that he was lost and starving. Most of the people were right I suppose, the alien was just ruining stuff and kidnapping people, but he had a good reason, it still wasn't fair to the alien. Not all the judgements we make are wrong; we are never sure so it is safe to not judge a person. I feel that God doesn't want us to judge because I've heard before that only God can judge us, although practically our whole society is made around judgement.

    B. The teacher, who knew the alien and was touched by him, had a desire to set the alien free. He understood what the alien was going through, so he risked his own life set him free. This happens in our culture or schools in a less dramatic, but still heroic way. The way I see this happening is someone standing up for another person being bullied because they understand what its like.

  25. A. In Super 8 I don’t think there was a lot of judgment. One that sticks out the most is the Alien. No one knows its story they just automatically assume that he is bad. But a lot of people have already talked about that. Another judgment is upon Alice and her father. Everyone in the town despises Alice’s dad. If something bad happens they would already say “Oh I bet its Mr. Dainard.” To be honest no one in the movie knows why he is a drunk and has lost his way. Alice is judged by other people in the community because of the family she come from. She can’t help who her father is or where she comes from. An example from the movie is when Joe wants to hangout with Alice but, his father won’t let him because of who her father is. The Lord never wants us to make judgments towards one another but, because of the fall we simply can’t help it.

  26. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. We are set apart from God, we can never be holy, or perfect, but we can be as much like God as possible. For a start we can look at the heart, try and see people as God sees them. There was a ton of judgment in this movie, for example, Alice had judged Joe, thinking, "he is the sheriffs son, he will rat me out" when really Joe did not get along with his father, much less would he turn his crush into him, for being something as small as an unlicensed driver. A second example would be Joe's Father; he thought that Alice’s father had not changed a bit. When in reality he just needed forgiveness. Lastly, the movie director made the assumption that if he had Alice in his movie, then they would get close, which was also not true.

    1. I agree with you 100%. Even as Christians we still look at peoples outward appearance.

  27. A. One of the most obvious characters in the movie that was being judged on its outward appearance was the alien. It looked scary so the people all were immediately scared of it. I think that the judging was unfair even though he was messing up the town. The LORD wants us to make judgement, but not on the outward appearance. He wants us to identify whether that person is OK to hang around with by their attitude and heart.
    B. Charles was the director for the movie in the story. Immediately, right off the bat, the film gives us ideas about him. He seemed to only care about the zombie movie, even when it meant disobeying his parents by sneaking out at night. I believe that Charles was focused on the outcome of the movie (fame and fortune) rather than his friends. He would put his friends in danger just for a good movie shot. Another person that struck me as selfish was Alice's dad, Louis. He would get drunk and get thrown in jail a lot. The actor portrayed the character as a selfish, mental dad. He would treat Alice unfairly.
At Westminster I see a lot of selfishness and rudeness in the halls, lunch line, sport practices, and even after school. I believe that actions tell a lot about a person and how they react to the outcome. People want to be first in everything. Lines, sports, and even grades seem to be a race or competition. Cussing is also present in our school. I hear people say it under their breath or when teachers aren't looking. It is starting to become a problem in our community. More and more people become selfish or self-centered.

  28. A) the Alien was being judge by the children because of the appearance. The alien was hideous but it was actually warm hearted. When Joe was talking to the alien the alien did not hurt Joe. All the alien wanted was to go home, and not get tested on by scientist. God wants us to focus on the inside not the outside.

  29. B) Charles wanted to get the perfect shot in his movie which almost got his friends killed. Like during the train scene he was filming, and he did not care what was happening at the time even Joe tried to warn him. After the explosion he went looking for his camera still trying to making sure that his film was ok instead of asking his friends if they were ok. It was kind of selfish. I see this in life like when people become selfish with their things, and not caring about a thing in the world but themselves

  30. A) Everybody except for Joe and Mr. Woodward in the movie judged the alien buy it's outward appearance. Even though the alien killed people, if you treated it right it was harmless. Because of the aliens appearance all the other character try to kill and get rid of the monster. Our judgements aren't always wrong but God still doesn't want us to make judgements.
    B) Charles is fairly self centered. He almost got himself and his friends killed in the filming of the movie. He doesn't seem to be a christian by the way his sister dresses and the way he speaks. But this does not necessarily mean he isn't a christian. We see prideful and self- centered people everywhere we turn. Even looking into a mirror it is hard to not see a prideful person standing in front of us.

  31. A.) Many people in super 8 assumed that the alien was evil and just wanted to kill people. They were wrong the alien just wanted to go home. They assumed that based off the aliens actions and based off how the alien looked. Which is wrong. We are quick to judge people based off the outward appearance.

B.) Charles in my opinion is very self centered. He really started the whole plot of the movie because he wants to win this movie contest and he drags his friends around town shooting movies. He also sins many times in the movie like when he steals money from his parents. He was also jealous of Joe because he thought Alice likes him. Saying that without Charles the movie would not have a plot he was the person that started off the story line.

  32. A) The Alien was judged by almost everybody on its outward appearance. The people thought that it was just a mindless killer, but it just wanted to go to its home planet. I believe that God says that we should not look on the outward appearance but on the heart which is hard.
    B) Charles is a pretty self-centered guy. All he cares about is his movie. The first time we see him care for someone else is when his friend gets a piece of shrapnel in his ankle and he has to remove is. When we look at ourselves, it is hard to not see a prideful person.

    1. I totally agree with you Kirby. When we see someone for the first time we immediately make a judgement and we stick with it until we really get to know the person. When I was in 3rd grade, there was a new girl at my school that judged me negatively when she first saw me. It wasn't until the middle of 4th grade when she realized that her judgement was completely wrong.

  33. A.) The majority of people in the movie I threatened and want to kill the alien. But the alien was just scared and wanted to go home. They look at the appearance and see a big scary monster but don't look closer. That judgement is bad but in the end Joe and his friends look deeper. Not all judgements we make are wrong, the Lord wants to make judgements based on the BIble.

    1. I agree with this mostly... If there was a guy walking down the street of L.A. wearing all black with his hood up and carrying a gun, and we are not supposed to judge on the outward appearance then what would we do? Call the cops or not look on the outward appearance and try to know what he is in the heart..? I would not want to go up to him and talk to that guy.

  34. B.) In the movie it was quite easy to judge Charles. You could tell he really only cared about himself. He gets angry at Joe for liking Alice, but how was Joe supposed to know Charles liked her? He also, only cares about his movie and bullies Joe around.

  35. The characters defiantly judge the alien especially the air force people they don't actually take the time to see what the alien wants. The judgments they made were not fair and not right at all. All judgments we make should be with Christ in mind. I think the Lord wants us to make judgments because if we don't we will end up doing drugs or getting into trouble. I think Charles is so motivated to finish his movie because he is creating something worth while and something of his own which tells me he just wants to be appreciated and praised and their is nothing wrong with that. He also reminds me of me because he is really funny and creative.

  36. From I saw during the film, I can say that Charles had a strong obsession with getting his movie done. Charles wanted his movie to be absolutely perfect. He wanted it done at the perfect place, at the perfect time. The thing is, the train was derailed immediately once it passed by Charles' set, starting to cause massive explosions. Charles’ obsession with getting his movie done could’ve taken the life of him or even his friends. Once he found out that his camera broke, he immediately became disheartened. We can see this sort of act happening today because if we strive to get something done but don’t quite achieve it on the first try, we might be willing to take drastic measures to achieve it, almost maiming ourselves in the process.

  37. It was also to my attention that Cary had a strong obsession with dynamite. Almost every time I saw him during the movie, I would see him with a stash of dynamite. The movie was never clear on why this was, but I think that this has probably been apart of what his personality was his early childhood. This type of obsession, especially with dynamite can be very bad because he’s putting dynamite first, instead of God. He could also be seriously injured if one of his dynamites went off.

  38. A- Alice's dad at the beginning looked to all the citizens like a drunk and a jobless man with no responsibility. But later in the movie I realized that he was just extremely sad about Joe's mom dying in his place and he didn't know how to cope with him feeling that it was all his fault.

B- I feel that Charles was extremely passionate about his movie and that passion drove him to think only of himself for a while. Anything but his movie slipped his mind and he became totally oblivious to what was going on around him. He even got his friend to steal from his dad so the movie could go on. This was incredibly selfish of Charles and we as christians should try not to let our passions and desires get in our way of worshipping God.

  39. Also an example of judgement was when Alice judged Joe to telling the cops of her under age driving just because he was the deputy's son. Even though he could have judged her too for being irresponsible and taking her dad's car out without his permission or a license. This lets us know about how quickly we can judge people.

  42. A. I think that the Guy that worked at the store Judges Charles sister. He said she was so hot, and I don't think he knew her very well so he had no right doing that. Luke 22:30 says that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

    B. Joe really wanted to finish his movie. I have really wanted to finish something. Joe really wanted to save Alice. that shows that he is caring and very brave. People might not agree with me. they might think that he is stupid for doing that.
